The 29th Annual Light Up A Life event will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 5 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, located at 3600 West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro. The event is free and open to the public.

“This interfaith service offers guests a meaningful way to honor and remember special friends and family members,” said Paul Russ, vice president of marketing and development. “It represents a time to be comforted and share hope with others.”

After the service, the community is invited to view the Hospice Tree of Remembrance that stands in front of the VF Jeanswear Building at 400 North Elm Street in downtown Greensboro. This beautiful tree, known for its extraordinary number of tiny white lights will be lighted during the Festival of Lights on Friday, December 6 and remain lit through December 31.

Serving as this year’s guest speaker is Chesley (Ches) Kennedy, director of development for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s (UNCG) College of Arts and Sciences. In his current role, Kennedy is responsible for scholarship funding for 23 departments within this division of the university.  Active in his community, Kennedy serves on the board of directors of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra and has served on the boards of various organizations including Friends for an Earlier Breast Cancer Test, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Elsewhere Artists Collaborative, Greensboro Opera and Guilford Green Foundation.

After a successful career in specialty retail and launching his own store, Kennedy’s, he closed the store to return to school, earning a bachelor of art from UNCG in 2008 and a master of divinity from Duke University in 2012. Prior to joining UNCG, Kennedy served in the community of Spanish Harlem in New York at St. Edward the Martyr, a 130 year old parish and the host parish for the New York Common Pantry.
