Cancer Patients

Cancer is a condition that causes rapid growth of abnormal cells in the body. There are more than 100 types of cancer, all of which present with different symptoms, progressions and methods of treatment.

Palliative care and hospice care are both appropriate for cancer patients and can help alleviate patient discomfort and improve quality of life.

Palliative Care for Cancer

The goal of palliative care is to help patients and families achieve a better quality of life by assisting with advance care planning, relieving symptoms and establishing goals of care. Palliative care is for patients at any stage of their illness, starting with a diagnosis. Patients can choose to receive palliative care even if they are still receiving curative treatment for their cancer.

If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with a type of cancer, they may be a candidate for receiving palliative care. Read more about palliative care here, or contact HPCG’s palliative care team at 336.790.3672 or contact@hospicegso.org

Hospice Care for Cancer

Hospice care helps patients coping with terminal cancer by alleviating the mental, emotional and physical distress caused by their illness. Cancer patients who are admitted to HPCG’s hospice care will receive expert, in-home medical care to help them live with dignity and comfort as their disease progresses. Click here to learn more about the benefits of hospice care.

Despite the many varieties of cancer, there are some common symptoms that may indicate a patient’s readiness to enter hospice care.

Following are signs that you or your loved one coping with cancer may be eligible for hospice care:

  • Frequent, constant or debilitating pain (anywhere in the body).
  • Trouble breathing.
  • Loss of appetite, or trouble keeping down food.
  • Extreme fatigue.
  • Weakness and frailty.
  • Changes in alertness, confusion or agitation.
